Governor Bond Lake, in Greenville, Illinois was built and filled in the mid to late '60's for the water supply for Greenville and some surrounding communities.  It is in Bond County.  It also serves as a recreational lake for fishing, skiing, jetskiing and just relaxing and cruising on a pontoon boat.  It is approximately 775 acres in size and stocked with Catfish, Bass, Crappie and Bluegill.  You can fish, ski and swim at the lake although there are no public swimming areas.   Jetskis and waverunners are also allowed.  The Ski Club is a great facility to use to enjoy the lake at a very reasonable fee.  Check the "Ski Club"  link for membership information.  Fishing limits and regulations are on the "Fishing"  link and boating regulations and information are on the "Rules and Regulations"  link .

You MUST pay for a boat permit to put your boat or personal watercraft on the lake or YOU WILL GET A TICKET!!!  There are also horsepower limits for both boats and personal watercraft.   Call City Hall to get the current rates and restrictions.  The phone number there is 618-664-1644  if you have questions or need further information.  There are approximately 200 stickers available per season for out of county residents.  Get them early each year as they sell out quickly.  The stickers for Bond County residents are unlimited and can be purchased all year long, the fees are listed on the rules and regulations link.   There are two access areas with ramps to launch boats on the lake.  The marina with a launch area is on Red Ball Trail on the west side of the lake.  Check the "Marina"  link on my home page for more info about it.  There is also a boat ramp and parking area on Idler Lane, by the water plant, on the east side of the lake.  Surprisingly, the boat traffic/congestion is not bad at all on the lake, even on weekends.

To get to the lake from I-70, take the IL RT 127 exit (which is the exit on the east side of Greenville).  Turn right at the stop sign on the exit ramp.  Go straight through the stoplight and  over the overpass and get in the right turn lane and turn on Idler Lane.  Stay on Idler Lane and go through the first stop sign, the next stop sign will be at IL RT 140.   Illinois Route 140  runs east and west, and is on the north side of Greenville.  You can turn right to get to Woburn Road, or you can turn left to get to Red Ball Trail.  The lake is between Red Ball Trail on the west side, and Woburn Road on the east side; these roads run northeasterly.  You would take Red Ball Trail to get to the marina and subdivisions on the west side of the lake.  You would take Woburn Road to get to the Ski Club and the subdivisions on the east side of the lake.  Idler Lane is in between these two roads and deadends at the city boat launch by the water plant.

Greenville is about 50 miles from downtown St. Louis on Interstate 70, and the lake would be about another three or four miles north of town.  Click on the Greenville Chamber of Commerce website for more information about Greenville and the surrounding community.

To get some good aerial views of the lake check out terraserver.com.  It's a really neat website that you can look at satellite photos of most parts of the country!
